TV’s Batman, Adam West, has passed away from leukemia at the age of 88, it’s been reported.

Originally appearing as the Caped Crusader alongside Burt Ward’s Robin in the 1960s Batman television series, West had a long career on film and television. It’s his performance as the straightfaced Batman in the tongue-in-cheek series that he’s best associated with, though, and with good reason: it was one of the most popular television shows of its time, and for some people it is Batman.

West would return to the role throughout the years, most recently in the animated feature Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, and would make frequent guest appearances on other animated projects. Besides Batman, his most notable Bat-contribution was as aging television star Simon Trent, aka the Grey Ghost, on Batman: The Animated Series.

West will voice Batman once more alongside William Shatner’s Two-Face in an upcoming, as yet untitled animated movie.
